About Livagen
Structure and research context
Livagen is a synthetic tetrapeptide from the Khavinson bioregulator series with the sequence Lys-Glu-Asp-Ala (KEDA; formula C18H31N5O9, molecular weight 461.5 g/mol, CAS 433257-50-2). Its developers report that the sequence was obtained by directed chemical synthesis based on amino acid analysis of liver polypeptide preparations. Biochemical work has characterized it as a weakly hydrolyzed peptide, with small-intestinal peptide hydrolases reported not to cleave it even to a small extent.
Livagen in the research literature
In monolayer cultures of rat hepatocytes, Livagen was reported to increase the level of protein synthesis and the amplitude of its rhythmic fluctuations, with the largest changes in cells from older animals. An organotypic liver culture study examined immunocytochemical and morphometric parameters of the cell populations. In vitro, the peptide reduced glycyl-L-leucine dipeptidase activity in small-intestinal preparations by about 50%.
Cytogenetic studies in cultured lymphocytes have examined Livagen among several short peptides for effects on chromatin, including decondensation of heterochromatin and activity of ribosomal genes in nucleolar organizer regions.
