About Prostamax
Structure and research context
Prostamax is a synthetic tetrapeptide from the Khavinson bioregulator series with the sequence Lys-Glu-Asp-Pro (KEDP; formula C20H33N5O9, molecular weight 487.5 g/mol, CAS 473578-47-1). It carries an N-terminal lysine, two acidic residues and a C-terminal proline. Several of its published studies come from cytogenetic and biophysical groups in Tbilisi studying chromatin structure in cultured lymphocytes, with additional organotypic explant work in rat prostatic tissue.
Prostamax in the research literature
In cultured lymphocytes, Prostamax was reported to increase sister chromatid exchange frequency and the number of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions, and to reduce large pericentromeric heterochromatin variants on chromosomes 1 and 9, findings the authors interpreted as chromatin decondensation. Differential scanning calorimetry of lymphocyte chromatin showed a redistribution of heat between denaturation endotherms and small shifts to lower temperatures, which the authors attributed to partial relaxation of higher-order chromatin fibers. A related microcalorimetry study examined Prostamax together with copper and cadmium ions.
