About Vesugen

Structure and research context

Vesugen is a synthetic tripeptide from the Khavinson bioregulator series with the sequence Lys-Glu-Asp (KED). It consists of an N-terminal lysine followed by glutamic acid and aspartic acid, giving a short peptide with one basic and two acidic side chains. The KED sequence is one of the more frequently studied tripeptides from this research group and appears in cell-culture work on vascular endothelial cells, fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells and neuroendocrine tissue.

Vesugen in the research literature

In vascular endothelial cell cultures, the KED tripeptide was studied for its effects on endothelin-1, connexin and sirtuin-1 expression. Vesugen was also reported to increase the proliferation marker Ki-67 in late-passage endothelial and tissue-specific cultures, and docking modeled its contact with a CATC site in the MKI67 core promoter.

In prostatic fibroblast cultures, Vesugen increased expression of the differentiation factor CXCL12. In fetal bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, KED modulated expression of IGF1, FOXO1, TNKS2 and NFκB, and in organotypic pineal cultures it was reported to increase Ki-67 and reduce p53 expression.
